Why Eleuthera? Here's What Makes It Different
Eleuthera is a 110-mile-long island sitting just 50 miles east of Nassau. It's long been a secret among those who know the Bahamas well — quieter than Nassau, more intimate than Paradise Island, and genuinely, breathtakingly beautiful.
What sets it apart for weddings:
Pink sand beaches — yes, they're real, and yes, they're as stunning as you've seen on Instagram
Glass Window Bridge — one of the most dramatic natural landmarks in the entire Caribbean, where the dark Atlantic meets the pale turquoise Caribbean Sea
Private and uncrowded — you won't be competing with cruise ship tourists for your ceremony spot
Incredible light — as a photographer, I'll tell you honestly: the light in Eleuthera is unlike anywhere else I've ever shot. Golden hour here is something else entirely.
Best Time of Year to Get Married in Eleuthera
This is one of the most important decisions you'll make, and as a local I can give you the real answer — not the tourism board version.
Peak season: December through April
This is the sweet spot. Low humidity, temperatures in the mid-70s to low 80s°F, and virtually no rain. This is when Eleuthera is at its most comfortable and the light is soft and golden. Book early — venues and vendors fill up fast during these months.
Shoulder season: May and November
Still beautiful, slightly less busy, and often more affordable. May can be warm and humid but is generally still dry. November marks the tail end of hurricane season but is usually calm and stunning.
Hurricane season: June through October
I won't sugarcoat it — this is hurricane season in the Bahamas. That doesn't mean it rains every day, and many couples have had gorgeous weddings during this period. But you need wedding insurance, a backup plan, and a venue with flexible rescheduling policies. Some couples love the dramatic skies and moody light this season can bring. Just go in with eyes open.
My personal recommendation: If flexibility allows, aim for January through March. The weather is most reliable, the island is lush and green, and the light for photos is absolutely magical.
Choosing Your Venue
Eleuthera has a handful of truly special wedding venues. Here are the ones I know well from photographing real weddings there:
The Cove Eleuthera
One of the island's most stunning resort properties. Situated between two beaches — one calm, one dramatic — it offers incredible variety for photos within walking distance. The team there is experienced with destination weddings and the vibe is upscale without feeling stuffy.
French Leave Resort
French Leave Beach is one of the most beautiful stretches of sand on the island — wide, pink, and usually completely private. The resort is boutique and intimate, which is perfect if you're planning a smaller celebration.
The Other Side Hotel
If your aesthetic leans more modern, design-forward, and adventurous, The Other Side is unlike anything else in the Bahamas. Perched on a hillside with dramatic ocean views, it attracts couples who want something a little different.
Private Beach House or Villa
Some of my favorite weddings have been at private villas with no resort staff in sight — just the couple, their closest people, and the ocean. If you want complete freedom to design your day, this is worth exploring. Local wedding planners can connect you with the right properties.
Legal Requirements for Getting Married in the Bahamas
This is the part most couples forget to research until it's almost too late. Here's what you need to know:
You must apply for a Marriage License from the Registrar General's Department in Nassau
Both partners need to be in the Bahamas for at least one day before the license is issued
You'll need valid passports, proof of single status (if previously married, you'll need divorce or death certificates), and a completed application form
The license costs approximately $120 USD
You'll need a licensed marriage officer — your venue or wedding planner can usually arrange this
My honest advice: Work with a local Bahamian wedding planner, even if just for a few hours of consultation. They know exactly how to navigate the paperwork and can save you enormous stress.
Building Your Vendor Team
One thing I always tell couples planning from abroad: local vendors make or break a destination wedding.
Here's what you'll need and what to look for:
Wedding Planner
Unless you're planning an intimate elopement, a local planner is worth every penny. They know which vendors are reliable, which venues have hidden fees, and how to handle the unexpected — because something unexpected always happens on a Caribbean island.
Photographer (hi, that's me 👋)
This is the one vendor I'd encourage you to prioritize booking first. Your photos are what you'll have forever after the flowers wilt and the cake is eaten. As a local photographer, I know exactly where the light falls at every hour of the day at every major venue on this island. That knowledge is genuinely invaluable and something a traveling photographer simply can't replicate.
Florist
Fresh tropical flowers are one of Eleuthera's great gifts. Local florists work with what's naturally abundant on the island — expect lush, organic, tropical arrangements that feel completely at home in the setting.
Caterer / Chef
Many venues have in-house catering. If you're at a private villa, local private chefs can create incredible Bahamian-inspired menus featuring fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and local flavors your guests will never forget.
Hair and Makeup
Book early and confirm travel availability if your venue is in a remote part of the island. Some artists travel from Nassau, so logistics matter.
Getting Your Guests to Eleuthera
Eleuthera has two small airports — North Eleuthera Airport (ELH) and Governor's Harbour Airport (GHB). Both receive flights from Nassau and Miami. Most guests will connect through Nassau (NAS) or fly direct from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or Atlanta depending on the season.
Tips for guests:
Book flights early — seats on the small island-hopper planes fill up fast around popular wedding dates
Consider organizing a group charter from Nassau if you have 15+ guests
Water taxis connect North Eleuthera to Harbour Island if you're incorporating both islands
What to Budget For
I want to be honest with you here because so many destination wedding guides avoid this conversation.
A full destination wedding in Eleuthera — venue, catering, flowers, music, planner, and photographer — realistically starts around $15,000–$20,000 USD for an intimate celebration of 20–30 guests, and can climb to $80,000+ for a larger resort wedding.
Elopements and micro-weddings (10 guests or fewer) can be done beautifully for $5,000–$10,000 including photography.
The areas where couples most often underspend and regret it later:
Photography — please don't cut corners here
Planning support — a good local planner pays for themselves in mistakes avoided
Guest logistics — budget for welcome bags, transportation, and a welcome dinner
A Few Things Only a Local Would Tell You
After photographing weddings all over this island, here's what I know that you won't find in a travel guide:
The light at Glass Window Bridge peaks about 45 minutes before sunset. If you're doing portraits there, that's your window. Miss it and you miss the magic.
The east side of the island and the west side have completely different water colors. The Atlantic side is dramatic and deep blue. The Caribbean side is calm, shallow, and that impossible turquoise you've seen in photos. Both are stunning — they just create different moods for photos.
April and May bring the clearest water. If underwater or beach portraits matter to you, plan around this.
The island moves at its own pace. Build buffer time into every part of your day. Things will run a little late and that's okay — the best moments often happen in the in-between times anyway.
